‘Nomadland’

Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland won best film, Chloe Zhao earned best director and adapted screenplay, and Carey Mulligan and the late Chadwick Boseman took the top acting awards at the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards on Sunday (March 7).

Zhao became the first female and Chinese woman to win the directing award. Nomadland led the film leader board with four wins including Joshua James Richards for cinematography.

Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom earned three wins at the hybrid in-person/virtual ceremony, led by Boseman’s posthumous best actor award, while Focus Features’ Promising Young Woman took two including Mulligan’s win, and Daniel Kaluuya was named best supporting actor for Warner Bros’ Judas And The Black Messiah.

Oscar frontrunner Maria Bakalova won best supporting actress for Amazon Studios’ Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Netflix’s The Trial Of The Chicago 7 won for best ensemble.

A24’s Minari was named best foreign language film, while Alan Kim prevailed in the best young actor/actress contest.

In the TV categories, Netflix’s The Crown earned the most wins on four: best drama series, best actor in a drama series for Josh O’Connor, best actress in a drama series for Emma Corrin, and best supporting actress in a drama series for Gillian Anderson.

David Fincher’s Mank began the night with 12 nominations and emerged with one as Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale took the prize for best production design.
