‘Paper Tiger’, ‘Red Rocks’

James Gray’s Paper Tiger and Bruno Dumont’s Red Rocks are among the Gala titles selected for the second Doha Film Festival (DFF).

Gray’s film, about two brothers who become entangled in a dangerous Russian mafia scheme, heads to Qatar for its MENA premiere. It launched in Cannes Competition in May, and has since been on a lengthy festival run including Sydney, Jerusalem, Locarno, New York and BFI London Film Festival.

Dumont’s Red Rocks, following a five-year-old and his friends scrambling over the rocks of the French Riviera, launched as a Special Screening in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and has subsequently played Reykjavik, San Sebastian and New York festivals.

They are two of five titles programmed for the Gala section. Four films have been added to the DFF Special Screenings programme, including Ali El Arabi’s India-Egypt-US co-production 52 Blue, about a young man who begins a journey to Qatar with the aim of meeting his idol Lionel Messi at the 2022 men’s football World Cup.

“Our Gala and Special Screenings will bring audiences together through films that move, surprise, and spark conversation,” said Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of the Doha Film Institute and director of DFF. “From gripping dramas and timely documentaries to stories filled with humour, adventure and discovery, the selection celebrates the courage to question what we take for granted and find dignity and truth in the complexity of human experience.”

Earlier this month, the festival announced four Qatari features for the Special Screenings programme and 15 features, including four Palestinian films, for its International Competition. The festival will open with Yemeni-UK filmmaker Sara Ishaq’s The Station.
