EXCLUSIVE: Paradise City Sales has taken on international sales rights to Martin Provost’s Love Lessons (Demain Je Tombe Amoureux) starring Fabrice Luchini as a retired professor forced to rethink his life after his wife leaves him.
Emmanuelle Devos, Chiara Mastroianni and Carole Bouquet also star in the director’s ninth feature which is currently shooting in the coastal Normandy town of Dieppe.
Provost reteams with longtime producers François Kraus and Denis Pineau-Valencienne at Les Films du Kiosque following 2023’s Bonnard, Pierre & Marthe which premiered at Cannes, and with DOP Guillaume Schiffman (an Oscar nominee for The Artist)
Love Lessons centres on a professor in his late 60s whose wife leaves him on the night he retires from teaching, turning his life upside down and leaving him to live by the lessons in love and literature he has been preaching to his students.
Provost says his films asks: “What is love, really? And what happens when your wife leaves you the very day you retire? At 67, Émile finds himself cornered – forced to rethink everything and reinvent his life.”
Among Provost’s previous films are Seraphine which won seven Cesar awards, TIFF-premiering period drama Violette, Berlin selection The Midwife starring Catherine Deneuve, and comedy The Good Wife with Juliette Binoche. Memento Distribution will release the film in France.
The film joins a busy autumn slate for Paradise City Sales (formerly Memento International) that also includes Oscar entries for Lebanon (Cyril Aris’ A Sad And Beautiful World) and India (Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound), Venice Days and TIFF Centrepiece title Memory Of Princess Mumbi, TIFF Centrepiece crime thriller Unidentified, TIFF special presentation Primavera and Cannes Un Certain Regard best actress winner I Only Rest In the Storm in NYFF’s main slate.
