Paramount Global is moving into local-language production and has appointed company veteran Syrinthia Studer to lead the charge.
As EVP of international productions Studer will oversee content strategy, development and production and build a slate of local-language and micro-budget films. Paramount Global heads want to boost worldwide subscriptions at Paramount+ and Paramount Global’s other direct-to-consumer platforms as big media conglomerates seek to bulk up their content war chests.
The executive served as Paramount Pictures EVP of worldwide acquisitions and most recently EVP of Nickelodeon and Awesomeness Films – Paramount’s sister companies at the recenty titled Paramount Global – where she oversaw live-action feature-length content for Awesomeness and Nickelodeon’s Kids & Family Studio.
In her new role Studer will build a pipeline sourced from North America and international territories for global release via limited theatrical or direct-to-consumer platforms. The production side of her remit will focus on originals and culturally specific local-language remakes sourced from Paramount Pictures’ film library.
Studer will be based in Los Angeles and manage a team of creative executives around the world. She reports to Dan Cohen, chief content licensing officer for Paramount Global, who praised her “incredible creative instincts to find stories in which audiences around the globe will relate”.
“Great stories know no boundaries,” said Studer, “I’m excited to join Dan’s team to launch this business and look forward to working with filmmakers around the world to help bring local language, culturally rich films to a global audience.
Among Studer’s notable acquisitions at Paramount were Book Club starring Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen which grossed $100m at the global box office, and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, to which she acquired home media rights via a multi-picture relationship with IFC Films.
At sister Paramount Global companies Awesomeness and Nickelodeon’s Kids & Family Studio the productions launched under Studer’s tenure include sports family comedy Fantasy Football, The J Team and the upcoming Honor Society. Prior to Paramount Global she worked in new business development with Loews Cineplex Entertainment.
