Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another has won the 2025 Grand Prix voted by the members of Fipresci, the international federation of film critics
The award will be presented at the opening gala of the San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 18. This is the fourth time the US filmmaker has been honoured with this award, having previously won for Magnolia (1999), There Will Be Blood (2007), which the director collected on the Kursaal stage in San Sebastián in 2008, and Phantom Thread (2018).
Fipresci is the oldest association of professional film critics and journalists, having celebrated its centenary in 2025. A total of 591 critics from 69 countries participated in this year’s vote. The other four finalists were Ildikó Enyedi’s Silent Friend, Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Voice of Hind Rajab, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, and Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord.
A modern adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland about the radical movements of the 1970s, One Battle After Another stars Leonardo DiCaprio and won a slew of Oscars, including for best picture, directing, adapted screenplay, supporting actor for Sean Penn, casting and editing.
Last year, the award was given to Walter Salles for I’m Still Here.
