EXCLUSIVE: Amsterdam-based Piece of Magic Entertainment (POM) is set to release Godzilla Minus Zero in 46 markets across Europe and beyond after closing a deal with Japan’s Toho Global.
The highly anticipated follow-up to Oscar-winning monster feature Godzilla Minus One will begin its rollout from November 4, with most territories releasing on November 5 and 6.
Key territories include Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Turkey and South Africa.
It marks a renewed partnership between POM and Toho after its theatrical release of Godzilla Minus One across 38 territories in 2023. The film earned widespread international acclaim, grossing more than $116m at the worldwide box office and becoming the first non-English-language film to win best visual effects at the 96th Academy Awards.
Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer and director of Godzilla Minus Zero, and will also oversee the visual effects. It is the first Japanese film to ever be filmed for IMAX. It is also the 38th film in the Godzilla franchise and the 33rd produced by Toho.
Set in 1949, two years after the first film, it continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new disaster. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as hero Koichi Shikishima alongside Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, who survived Godzilla’s first attack on Tokyo. As they confront a new threat, the two also face their own inner struggles and regrets.
Joining the cast is acclaimed actor Min Tanaka, seen most recently in Hirokazu Koreeda’s Sheep In The Box and 2025 box office hit Kokuho. He will play Kanji Murakami, a biologist carrying deep psychological scars from the war.
Returning cast from the previous film has also been revealed. Hidetaka Yoshioka reprises his role as Kenji Noda, who battles the new threat as the director of the Large-Scale Disaster Management Bureau. Yuki Yamada returns as Shiro Mizushima, the young crew member of the Shinsei Maru, alongside Kuranosuke Sasaki as captain Seiji Akitsu.
Sakura Ando, who won best supporting actress at the Japanese Academy awards for her role in Godzilla Minus One, returns as Sumiko Ota, who now runs an orphanage. Mio Tanaka returns as former destroyer captain Tatsuo Hotta.
“Following the incredible response to Godzilla Minus One, we are thrilled to once again partner with Toho Studios to bring the next chapter of this legendary franchise to cinemas,” said Caspar Nadaud, CEO and founder of Piece of Magic Entertainment.
“Godzilla has an extraordinary legacy, and with Godzilla Minus Zero, audiences can look forward to a new spectacular big-screen experience from an exceptional filmmaking team – one that will bring the scale, intensity and power of Godzilla back to cinemas as a true big-screen cinematic experience.”
A release in Japan is set for November 3 and the film is due to open in North America on November 6 through Toho and GKids. Glasgow-based Anime Limited, which was acquired by Toho last December, will release the film in the UK and Ireland.
