‘Children Of The Monkey’

EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s PiperPlay has taken on international sales for Tommaso Landucci’s debut feature Children Of The Monkey, which is set to premiere in Venice’s Horizons competition.

The screenplay for Children Of The Monkey, which Landucci co-wrote with Damiano Femfert, previously won the Franco Solinas Award in 2021 and the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film Lab Grand Prize in 2023. It was also selected for MIA’s Co-Production Market & Pitching Forum.

The film follows Dario, the father of a young boy living with cerebral palsy whose severe cognitive and motor disabilities, together with visual impairment, place increasing strain on the family.

As Dario develops a stronger emotional bond with his nephew than with his own son, he gradually slips into the role of the father he wishes he could have been. What begins as an emotional refuge evolves into a dangerous emotional displacement that threatens to tear the entire family apart.

The cast is led by Riccardo Scamarcio alongside Fausto Russo Alesi and Lydia Liberman.

It is produced by Maurizio Piazza and Andrea Calbucci for Lungta Film, Andrea Leone for Mosaicon Film and Riccardo Scamarcio for Lebowski, in association with HBO Max and in collaboration with Rai Cinema.

The film is executive produced by Academy Award winner James Ivory.
