Production will begin this month in France on Ballerina 2, a sequel to 2016 French animated feature Ballerina.
The film is produced by French production firm Good Hero, which is also developing a separate animated series in the Ballerina world, to launch in the wake of the film.
Laurent Zeitoun has written and will direct Ballerina 2, and will produce with Gregory Ouanhon for Good Hero. Gaumont will distribute the film in France and internationally, with a global release planned for late 2029.
The 2016 first film grossed over $120m worldwide, releasing in more than 100 countries. It follows a young girl who flees a rural orphanage to pursue her dream of becoming a ballerina at the Paris Grand Opera House.
Elle Fanning and Dane DeHaan led the English-language voice cast, with Camille Cottin and Malik Behtalha on the French version.
Eastenders writer Andrew Burrell will be series writer for the Ballerina series.
Good Hero’s upcoming animated slate includes Wings Of Freedom voiced by Eva Longoria and Nicholas Galitzine, for which it showed first footage at a Studiocanal/Mediawan presentation in Cannes.
“The film embodies what it means to follow your dreams — the universal values of overcoming challenges, hard work and commitment, the power of artistic expression, and creating positive change in the world by being true to yourself,” said a statement from Zeitoun and Ouanhon about the first film. “We want to expand the Ballerina universe and introduce this magical, heartwarming story to a new generation of young women who already personify these values.”
