Hansel and Gretel are getting the 3D makeover. Hansel and Gretel in 3D will be a live-action, effects-driven version of the classic fairytale set to shoot on location in Germany in spring 2011.

Producers are Scott Gardenhour from The Institute and Kira Madallo Sesay from Kalliope Films. The Institute, which was co-founded by Michael Bay and Gardenhour in 2001, is a multi-platform media company that combines creativity with brand marketing knowledge.

Joseph C. Pepe, the lead character designer on Avatar, is on board the project.

The German fairytale, made famous by the Brothers Grimm, is about a brother and sister who become lost in the woods, where they discover a house made of sweets as well as a frightening witch.
