Quentin Tarantino will be the guest of honour at Cannes Classics, the repertory cinema strand of Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection.
Tarantino will present two western films by George Sherman – 1949’s Red Canyon, and 1950’s Comanche Territory – and will take part in a discussion with critic and filmmaker Elvis Mitchell.

The Classics lineup includes the Cannes pre-opening film, a 4K restoration of Charlie Chaplin’s 1925 The Gold Rush, restored by the L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory at the Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna. Mk2 Films is arranging a worldwide re-release of the restoration on June 26.
Alejandro G. Inarritu will present a 4K restoration of Amores perros, for its 25th anniversary. The film won the Critics’ Week grand prix at its launch in Cannes in 2000.
Other selections include the world premiere of The One I Loved, Diane Kurys’s film about French film couple Simone Signoret and Yves Montand. Kurys was the first woman to open Cannes, with Un Homme amoureux in 1987.
Istvan Szabo will be honoured at the festival as part of the centenary celebration of the International Federation of Film Critics, with a screening of Szabo’s 1999 title Sunshine; while the festival will also honour the late Edward Yang, screening his 2000 title Yi Yi.
The Classics lineup will close on Friday, May 23 with a 4K restoration of Stanley Kubrick’s 1974 epic Barry Lyndon, undertaken by the Criterion Collection.
The Cannes Official Selection was unveiled on April 10, with further titles added later that month. Juliette Binoche will head up the Competition jury, with the festival running from May 13-24.
