‘White River’

Paris-based sales outfit Reel Suspects has boarded Ma Xue’s erotic drama White River which will world premiere in Rotterdam’s Bright Future Competition.

White River follows a woman whose routine of cooking, cleaning and observing strict quarantine rules is disrupted when she becomes entangled in an erotic web with her husband and an enigmatic young waiter. Reel Suspects will market premiere the title at EFM.

Produced by Yilu Partners and Dreama Pictures, the Mandarin and English language film stars Tian Yuan, Song Ningfeng and Xu Weihao.

Reel Suspects’ founding head Matteo Lovadino called the film a “female-directed sensual drama that challenges the prevalent view of female sexuality while rejecting objectification in search of novel expressions of pleasure.”

The South Korean production is Ma’s first feature that she wrote, directed and produced. The Beijing-born filmmaker who studied in Seoul is already in post-production on her second film Sonata of Wave and is working on her third feature titled Aroma Dreams, expected to wrap production in 2023.

Reel Suspects is also selling Dick Verdult’s Rotterdam title If Yes, OK. The Dutch feature debut is a dark comedy that follows the teenage daughter of a rich and toxic family who escapes by processing her life through a Kabuki-style theatre and enters a whole new level of insanity.

Reel Suspects has also just added Croatian heist road movie Savages to its slate before market premiering the first feature from Dario Lonjak at EFM. Produced by Alka Film, Savages centres on a Croatian war veteran, a Bosnian smuggler and a Roma driver who decide to rob a gas station to reach the finals of the World Cup and end up lost in a radical Islamist terrorist camp fighting for their survival.

Also on Reel Suspect’s slate is Japanese filmmaker Keishi Kondo’s sci-fi horror New Religion. The film is set for a North American premiere at the upcoming January Slamdance festival and Reel Suspects will market premiere it at EFM. New Religion follows a woman mourning her daughter’s tragic death who allows a photographer to take pictures of her spine, but with every camera flash, her daughter’s spirit gets closer.
