Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil scared up an excellent £4.2m to top this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, with the biggest opening of the horror franchise by a clear distance.

The film took a £6,926 location average from 608 sites for Sony. It is the biggest opening of the eight Resident Evil films to date, with more than double the £1.7m full opening of 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D; and is less than £600,000 behind the £4.8m total of that film as the highest-grossing in the franchise. It has overtaken the totals of all six other live-action Resident Evil films, including 2002 first title Resident Evil (£2.8m).

The 2026 Resident Evil also topped the £2.6m start of Cregger’s Oscar-winning Weapons from last year. That film went on to an £11.9m total, a strong result for a horror; Resident Evil will have the £10m mark in its sights first, then look to challenge Weapons’ total.

Warner Bros’ Practical Magic 2, number one the previous weekend, dropped 47%, with £1.5m across its second session. It is up to £5.6m total, having overtaken the £3.3m lifetime of the 1999 first film.

Anthony Maras’s Second World War drama Pressure added £1.1m on its second weekend, falling a slim 26%. It is up to £4.3m for Studiocanal.

The distributor also had Aardman Animations title Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom opening in cinemas this weekend, released on behalf of Sky Cinema. Steve Cox and Matthew Walker’s family title began with just over £1m from 647 sites at a £1,585 average, and has £1.5m including previews. This is below the £2.1m opening of 2015’s Shaun The Sheep Movie, which went on to £13.8m; but above the £1.3m start of 2019’s Shaun The Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, which ended on £7.1m. Studiocanal will be aiming for a final result between those two totals.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remains in the top five after 10 weekends in cinemas, and has taken more than box office rival Spider-Man: Brand New Day for the second weekend in a row. The Universal title added £587,000 on its latest session, falling 34% from its previous weekend, and is up to £85.8m. It is currently the 10th-highest-grossing film of all time, behind Avengers: Endgame (£88.7m) in ninth.

The top five titles took a cumulative £8.4m this weekend, up 10% on last weekend and up 38% on the equivalent weekend from last year. Universal’s literary adaptation Sense And Sensibility and Paramount adventure Heart Of The Beast starring Brad Pitt could see that figure rise above the £10m mark again next weekend.
