Rooney Mara will lead the cast of Antonia Campbell-Hughes’ Quest For Love, which HanWay Films has boarded for international sales ahead of Cannes.
WME Independent is handling North American sales.
Mara will play Maris, described as “a deeply complex woman who explores her capacity to feel love through her relationship with her estranged 10-year-old son”.
Raised around her recently deceased father’s euthanasia work, Maris draws people into her orbit, but her nocturnal habits hint at a dangerous violence beneath the surface. Unlike Maris, Her son Maxy knows right from wrong, and uses her tricks against her to survive.
Written and to be directed by Campbell-Hughes, the film will shoot and take place in Paris.
Macdara Kelleher and John Keville will produce for Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Pictures, which has recent credits including Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon and Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa’s Saipan.
Gilles Chanial of Luxembourg’s Les Films Fauves is co-producing and Mara has an executive producer credit.
The film was developed as part of Screen Ireland and the Luxembourg Film Fund’s initiative for female and non-binary filmmakers, launched at Cannes in 2023.
Campbell-Hughes recently wrapped her second feature as director, High End, starring Andrea Riseborough, Guy Pearce, Raffey Cassidy and Alessandro Nivola.
“Cinema has created many magnetic and iconic characters who dance on the edge of subversion and violence, from American Psycho to Silence of the Lambs, but few are women,” said HanWay Films CEO Gabrielle Stewart. “Antonia and Rooney have a very clear vision to challenge us with Maris, who tears through Paris on her ducati: enigmatic, beautiful, violent and a mother.”
