EXCLUSIVE: The Match Factory has boarded international sales on Yesim Ustaoglu’s What Remains ahead of its world premiere in competition at San Sebastian International Film Festival in September.
Mubi, which owns The Match Factory and is a co-producer on the film, has acquired all rights in Turkey with release plans to be announced in the coming months.
What Remains follows a poetess who breaks out of her suffocating life to get back in touch with her inner voice and conscience. She questions accustomed concepts of family and the meaning of life, and paves a new path for her family members too.
The film is produced by the filmmaker’s Ustaoglu Film from Turkey, with Luxembourg’s Tarantula, France’s Cite Films, and Bulgaria’s RFF International. Co-producers with Mubi are Turkey’s Pak Ventures and Yuvision, with the film made in collaboration with Turkey’s Istos Film.
Backers include the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, France’s Cinéma du Monde, the Luxembourg Film Fund, and the Bulgarian National Film Center.
Turkish filmmaker Ustaoglu’s seven previous features include Pandora’s Box, which won the Golden Shell for best film at San Sebastian in 2008, with Tsilla Chelton winning the Silver Shell for best actress.
“What Remains is the story of a journey that emerges from a life in which we find ourselves trapped, one where we have almost lost our appetite for life and our creative inspiration,” said Ustaoglu. “It is a journey that allows us to experience freedom, simplicity, the ability to truly see, hear and touch, and ultimately, the meaning of unconditional love.”
San Sebastian Film Festival runs from September 18-26.
