Bradley Cooper’s New York Film Festival closing night gala Is This Thing On? starring Will Arnett will open through Searchlight Pictures on December 19.
Arnett stars as a man going through a divorce who finds new purpose on the New York comedy scene, while his wife, played by Laura Dern, confronts the sacrifices she made for their family.
The cast includes Andra Day, Cooper, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, and Scott Icenogle.
Cooper, Arnett, and Mark Chappell co-wrote the screenplay, and Cooper, Weston Middleton, Arnett, and Kris Thykier served as producers.
Arnett starred in the cult TV series Arrested Development as well as Lego franchise films, and co-presents the Smartless podcast. Dern’s credits include Marriage Story, Wild At Heart, Jurassic Park, and TV hit Big Little Lies.
Cooper’s last directorial outing was the Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro which Netflix released and debuted on its platform in 2023.
Searchlight’s other awards contender at this relatively early stage of the season before the fall festival acquisition titles have been seen, is Hikari’s comedy drama Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser. It premieres in TIFF in a few weeks and opens in North America on November 21.
