The Seville European Film Festival has cancelled its opening gala, scheduled for Friday, November 6 at the Cartuja Centre CITE, following the deadly train crash in Urda, Toledo.
In a statement, festival organisers said the decision was taken “as a mark of respect and solidarity with the victims of the accident, their families and all those affected.”
The collision between two high-speed trains, the cause of which remains under official investigation, left 69 people dead and 110 injured. The causes of the accident remain under official investigation.
The festival confirmed the rest of its programme, running from November 6-14, will go ahead as scheduled, including film screenings and industry events.
The screening schedule for the opening film, Viva Carmen! (Carmen, L’Oiseau Rebelle), remains unchanged. Sébastien Laudenbach’s animated feature will be shown at a separate screening, as has been customary in recent years under the festival’s current director. It will be held at 17:30 at the Cervantes theatre on November 6.
The presentation of the Honorary Giraldillo to Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland, originally scheduled for the opening gala, will instead take place on Friday, November 6, at 20:30 at Cine Cervantes, alongside a screening of Isabelle Stever’s I Rarely Wake Up Dreaming.
