EXCLUSIVE: South Korean stars Ra Mi-ran and Ko Kyung-pyo are to reunite in Bok-ja’s Special Rice Cake Shop (working title), which Showbox is launching at the Cannes market.
The comedy drama follows a shop owner and debt-ridden young man who become unlikely partners when the rice cakes they create become a sensation. But the secret behind their success leads to unwanted attention and unexpected consequences.
The story is based on 2012 French film Paulette, which was produced by Gaumont, Mitzé Films and France 2 Cinéma.
It marks the feature directorial debut of Kim Gyung-yoon and is produced by Kim Young-min, whose credits include horror blockbuster Exhuma, the biggest film at South Korea’s box office in 2024. Kim Young-min is CEO of production company Map.
Ra is a prolific actress whose recent features include superhero film Hi-Five and action comedy Citizen Of A Kind while Ko was last at Cannes in 2022 with Park Chan-wook’s Decision To Leave. The two previously starred together in hit TV series Reply 1988.
Further cast include Minnie of K-pop girl group i-dle, Park Gyeong-hye and Jang Yong-won.
Now in post-production, a release is planned in 2027.
