Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has acquired worldwide rights to Maude Apatow’s directorial debut Poetic License, the 2025 TIFF hit that was originally acquired and then released by embattled newcomer Row K.
SPC plans a 2027 theatrical launch for the coming-of-age comedy about best friends who vie for the attention of an attractive middle-aged mother auditing their college poetry workshop. Leslie Mann, Cooper Hoffman, and Andrew Barth Feldman star.
Apatow said, “I grew up watching and loving the films released by Sony Pictures Classics. SPC added, “Poetic License marks the arrival of an exciting new chapter for filmmaker Maude Apatow, whose distinctive creative vision is evident in every frame.”
Apatow directed from a script by Raffi Donatich. Producers include Judd Apatow, Josh Church, Benjamin Hung for August Night, Thalia Daniel, Maude Apatow, Olivia Rosenbloom, and Will Greenfield. Executive producers include Jamal Daniel, Michelle Upton, Renee Witt, Harrison Kreiss and Jay Cassidy.
SPC negotiated the deal with WME Independent on behalf of the filmmakers and August Night.
Row K acquired the feature in a four-film spending spree in Toronto last autumn, however in March it emerged the company was putting the film back on the market amid an internal reorganisation that eventually saw the departure of president Megan Colligan and two other senior executives.
Row K sources said the TIFF acquisition Charlie Harper remains on the release schedule.
