Sony Pictures Classics has picked up all rights in the US, Latin America and Southeast Asia to Jean-Pierre Jeunet Violette starring Leïla Bekhti, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Melvil Poupaud.
The deal marks the distributor’s fourth collaboration with Jeunet, following the releases of Amelie, The City Of Lost Children, and Micmacs.
Based on Albin Michel’s novel Fresh Water For Flowers, Violette centres on a cemetery caretaker whose peaceful life is thrown off course when a stranger shows up on her doorstep compelling her to confront her troubled past filled with hidden truths.
Jeunet and Guillaume Laurant co-wrote the screenplay and the film is produced by Mediawan’s 24 25 Films and Palomar.
Jeunet said, “Valérie Perrin, the author of this magnificent novel, said: ‘I wrote it, Jean-Pierre will paint it.’” Sony Pictures Classics negotiated the deal with Studiocanal and said, “Jean-Pierre Jeunet has a singular gift for weaving together multiple storylines with humour, pathos and that unmistakable touch of whimsy that has made films from The City Of Lost Children to Amélie such magical and enduring experiences.”
Bekhti has starred in Once Upon My Mother and Maria Montessori), Schoenaerts has starred in Rust And Bone and The Danish Girl, and Poupaud’s credits include Jeanne Du Barry and One Fine Morning.
