‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day scored the second-highest third weekend at the North American box office with an estimated $70m haul that propelled the webslinger past Avatar to rank fourth in the all-time domestic rankings.

Now standing at $785.8m after 17 days, Destin Daniel Cretton’s Brand New Day starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal has overtaken Avatar on $785.2m with 2021 predecessor Spider-Man: No Way Home on $814.9m and 2019 smash Avengers: Endgame on $858.4m firmly within its sights. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens remains the leader on $936.7m. All numbers are unadjusted for inflation.

The tentpole has crossed $2bn worldwide to rank as Sony Pictures’ biggest release of all time. Screen will report global and international box office on Monday.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in second place earned $23.2m for $505.7m after five sessions through Universal, followed by three new arrivals. Warner Bros’ dinosaur survival adventure The End Of Oak Street from David Robert Mitchell and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor opened third on $21m, roughly where it was expected to land; Paramount’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie in fourth grossed $20.5m and becomes the second-best in the children’s franchise after PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie on $22.8m in 2023. Trafalgar Releasing opened the girl band documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts at number five on $4m.

$4bn summer

Box office for the weekend produced $160.1m as year-to-date reached $6.9bn, up 19.4% against 2025 by the same stage. The summer season crossed $4bn last week and stands at $4.2bn, which is tracking 23.6% ahead of last year’s season and 5.7% ahead of pre-pandemic summer 2019.

Box office crossed the $4bn summer mark on August 10 after 102 days, powered by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, and Obsession. The only other post-pandemic summer to cross the milestone was 2023, the year of ‘Barbenheimer’, on $4.1bn. 2013 remains the highest summer on an unadjusted $4.8bn when Iron Man 3 kicked off the season.

Focus Features opened the stage capture feature Six: The Musical Live at number six on $3m. Venky Atluri’s Tamil-language feelgood romance Vishwanath And Sons arrived in tenth place on $1.6m through Shloka Entertainments.

Mubi reported that Jane Schoenbrun’s Cannes selection Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma expanded from five to 54 sites in its second weekend, adding $907,200 to reach $1.3m. The feature entered additional sites in New York and Los Angeles and top 15 markets around the country. Mubi sources said horror parody was connecting with the same crowd that turned out to see Backrooms and Obsession.

Black Bear opened the Matthew McConaughey neo western and 2025 SXSW premiere The Rivals Of Amziah King to $1m from 632 sites. Andrew Patterson’s feature about a beekeeper who reconnects with his former foster daughter as he protects his business also stars Angelina LookingGlass.
