EXCLUSIVE: Steve Toussaint and Sanaa Lathan will lead the cast of C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi’s psychological drama A Blue Butterfly.

The film begins production in early March, shooting in London and Kigali, capital of Rwanda. With a script by Toussaint, it is produced by Stella Nwimo, and co-produced by Rebecca Long for the duo’s UK production company Boudica Entertainment.

A Blue Butterfly follows Sentwali, a man haunted by his past who lives a cocooned life driving a limousine through the city. His sole human connection is with frail Holocaust survivor Joseph, who rides in his limousine and understands the weight of forced violence.

When Sentwali meets charismatic actress Emily who sees past his carefully maintained distance, the possibility of redemption and a future flickers to life.

The film will look to explore survivor’s guilt, redemption and the impossibility of self-forgiveness.

Nwimo and Long are meeting sales executives at this week’s European Film Market about the project.

Nwimo recently produced Olive Nwosu’s Lady, which debuted at Sundance and plays in Panorama at the Berlinale. Boudica Entertainment has credits including Campbell X’s Edinburgh 2025 title Low Rider; and last year was named as ‘Ones to watch’ in Screen’s Brit50 feature of the UK’s top independent film production companies.

Obasi is a leading Nigerian filmmaker whose third feature Mami Wata debuted at Sundance 2023, winning the Special Jury Prize in the World Dramatic Competition and was Nigeria’s entry to the best international feature Oscar.

UK actor Toussaint recently appeared in HBO’s House Of The Dragon, and has credits including Steve McQueen’s Small Axe; while US actress Lathan appeared in Succession and has credits in Alien vs. Predator and Love & Basketball.
