‘Succession’

HBO’s Succession leads the pack of 2022 Emmy nominees with 25 nods followed by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus on 20 apiece.

Succession will contest the best dramatic series category with Better Call Saul (AMC), Euphoria (HBO), Ozark (Netflix), Severance (Apple TV+), Squid Game (Netflix), Stranger Things 4 (Netflix) and Yellowjackets (Showtime).

Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong are in contention for best lead dramatic actor for Succession, as are Jason Bateman for Ozark and Lee Jung-jae for Squid Game. Ozark’s Laura Linney earned a nomination on Tuesday (July 12) alongside Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh for Killing Eve and Zendaya for Euphoria.

Best comedy series nominees are Abbott Elementary (ABC), Barry (HBO), Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO), Hacks (HBO), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime Video), Only Murders In The Building (Hulu), Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) and What We Do in the Shadows (FX).

Jean Smart is in the running for best comedy actress for Hacks and goes against a field that includes Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary and Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant.

HBO’s The White Lotus nearly earned a clean sweep in the supporting actress in limited or anthology series or movie category, taking five out of the six slots. The exception was Mare Winninghan for Dopesick. Like both shows, The Dropout earned limited series nods and marks Searchlight Television’s first production.

For the first time the Television Academy did not list the number of nominations by network. There have been occasional irregularities in prior tallies and streamers have made it trickier to define what qualifies as a network. For the record calculations reveal that HBO and HBO Max led the way with a combined 140 nods while Netflix garnered 105.

The eligibility period for 2022 nominees required shows to air from June 1 2021 to May 31 2022. The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on September 12 from 5-8pm PT on NBC and will stream live for the first time on Peacock.
