The first programming wave at the inaugural Sundance Film festival Colorado edition (January 21-31, 2027) has been announced and will feature anniversary screenings of independent classics from the festival archives.
Screenings in the Legacy Program (formerly known as From The Collection) include 25th anniversary 4K restored versions of Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002) starring Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal; Justin Lin’s crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow (2002 festival premiere); Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown And Z-Boys (2001); and Patricia Cardoso’s coming-of-age story Real Women Have Curves (2002) starring America Ferrera in her feature debut.
Julie Taymor’s early-career drama Fool’s Fire (1992) gets a 35th anniversary screening, as do Barbara Hammer’s queer sexuality documentary Nitrate Kisses (1993), and Tom Kalin’s true crime drama Swoon (1992).
Sundance Film Festival presents: Cinema Interruptus featuring Memento will screen a two-part session around Christopher Nolan’s second feature Memento (2001) starring Guy Pearce as a man with amnesia trying to find his wife’s killer. The “cinema interruptus” event borrows from a tradition established at University of Colorado Boulder’s Conference On World Affairs wherby audience members can call for the film to pause at any moment to comment or ask a question. Critic and author Josh Larsen will host the event.
Letterboxd is a co-presenter of The Legacy Program running January 27-31. 2027 also marks the 30th anniversary of Sundance Institute and UCLA Film & Television Archive’s preservation initiative. The Sundance Institute Collection at UCLA holds material from more than 1,000 titles and has participated in restorations of Hoop Dreams, Mysterious Skin, Better Luck Tomorrow and Swoon, among others.
