‘Borderline’

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF) has selected 11 fiction features and 11 documentaries for its two Baltic Competitions.

The fiction strand has three world premieres.

They are: Ignas Jonynas’s Borderline, a Lithuanian thriller about an ornithologist who is forced into the world of smuggling illegal contraband as he cares for his mentally vulnerable daughter; Latvian comedy-drama Flesh, Blood, Even A Heart from Alise Zariņa, about a 30-year-old woman struggling with her body image; and Paavo Westerberg’s Therapy, about four couples who try to save their marriages on a five-day wellness retreat.

The latter is a Finland-Estonia co-production.

The strand will open with Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors, screening out of competition. The film premiered in competition at Cannes where it topped the Screen jury grid and won the Francois Chalais Prize.

Documentary competition

For the first time, Tallinn is presenting two separate Baltic competitions, one for fiction and one for documentary.

The Baltic fiction jury comprises Georgian filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze, Turkish director Gözde Kural and executive producer Montse Triola.

The Baltic documentary jury will be UK-based doc consultant Ana Fernández Saiz, US curator and journalist Pamela Cohn and Dutch filmmaker Koen Suidgeest.

The festival runs November 7-23.
