‘The Banshees Of Inisherin’

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has unveiled the nominations for the 2023 Golden Globe awards.

On the film side, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin has picked up the most nominations with eight, followed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once with six.

Banshees is up for best musical or comedy, director, screenplay and actor (musical or comedy) for Colin Farrell; plus three supporting nods for Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon.

McDonagh, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are joined on the all-male director list by James Cameron, Baz Luhrmann, and Steven Spielberg.

No films directed by a woman are nominated in either best film category, or for best international film. Turning Red, directed by Domee Shi, is the only film directed by a woman nominated in the best animated feature category.

Searchlight Pictures is the leading film distributor with 12 nominations, with A24 on 10 and Netflix on nine.

The TV series with the most nominations is Abbott Elementary on five, followed by The Crown, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders In the Building, Pam And Tommy and The White Lotus on four.

The controversial event will return to US screens following last year’s low-key un-televised ceremony, after the HFPA reached a broadcast agreement with NBC and Peacock.

The Golden Globes will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at the Beverly Hilton, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.

The HFPA has been attempting to reform itself since a 2021 bombshell report in Los Angeles Times alleged financial impropriety and a lack of ethnic diversity among membership. The group brought in 103 new voters earlier this year, including members of international critics’ organisation, Fipresci.

Last year’s winners included The Power Of The Dog, West Side Story and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.
