‘The Education Of Jane Cumming’

EXCLUSIVE: Conic has acquired UK-Ireland distribution rights to Sophie Heldman’s The Education Of Jane Cumming, which it will release in cinemas in early 2027.

Conic acquired the film directly from the film’s producers. The Education Of Jane Cumming will have its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival in August, following its launch in Panorama at the Berlinale in February.

Sales agent Global Constellation has also sold the film to France (ASC Distribution), Italy (I Wonder Pictures), Spain (Filmin), Portugal (No Comboio), India (Big Tree Entertainment), Indonesia (PT Falcon) and inflight/ships (Aardwolf).

Previous deals for the film include Germany (Farbfilm Verleih) and Switzerland (Frenetic Films).

Adapted from Lilian Faderman’s 1983 book Scotch Verdict, set in Edinburgh in 1810 and inspired by true events, The Education Of Jane Cumming follows two teachers whose lives are thrown into turmoil after one of their pupils accuses them of having a love affair.

The film is co-written by Heldman and Flora Nicholson, and stars Nicholson, Clare Dunne, Fiona Shaw and 2024 Screen UK-Ireland Star of Tomorrow Mia Tharia.

It is produced by Bettina Brokemper for Germany’s Heimatfilm, in co-production with Karin Koch for Switzerland’s Dschoint Ventschr and Nadira Murray for the UK’s Sylph Productions. Susan Simnett is executive producer.

It is Heldman’s second feature as director, after 2010 drama Colors In The Dark.
