Hollywood Does Abortion

EXCLUSIVE: The Film Sales Company president Andrew Herwitz said on Thursday (May 28) the company will represent worldwide sales for the documentary Hollywood Does Abortion ahead of its world premiere at Tribeca Festival next month.

Barbara Attie, Janet Goldwater and Mike Attie directed the feature which explores how Hollywood’s abortion storylines have shaped America’s political reality and pro-choice and anti-abortion stances.

The feature uses film and television touchstones including scenes from Juno, Dirty Dancing, Maude, and Grey’s Anatomy to examine the tropes, myths, and moral panics that have defined abortion onscreen for generations and their influence on the political hot potato.

Attie, Goldwater, and Attie serve as producers alongside Eliza Licht, and Jamie Boyle wrote the screenplay. Angela Tucker, Rachel Bloom, and Ruth Ann Harnisch are the executive producers. Bloom, Gillian Robespierre, Zoanne Clack, and Adrienne Barbeau are among those featured in the documentary.

Emmy-nominated Janet Goldwater and Barbara Attie have collaborated on documentaries such as Abortion Helpline and the 2020 Oscar-shortlisted short This Is Lisa.

Mike Attie is a former Sundance Documentary Film Fellow whose feature documentary In Country premiered at Full Frame and played Hot Docs. He is currently directing and producing the Ford Foundation-funded documentary: Untitled Pennhurst Documentary.

Hollywood Does Abortion premieres in Tribeca’s Spotlight Documentary section on June 7.
