‘The Harder They Fall’

Jeymes Samuel’s western The Harder They Fall has earned 12 nods to lead the field in the 2022 NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Image Awards nominations with Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith and Rebecca Hall also among the contenders.

The Harder They Fall was nominated on Tuesday (January 18) for outstanding motion picture along with last season’s Oscar contender Judas And The Black Messiah, King Richard, Respect, and The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

The western’s Jonathan Majors is in the running for outstanding actor as are Denzel Washington for The Tragedy Of Macbeth, LaKeith Stanfield for Judas And The Black Messiah, Mahershala Ali for Swan Song, and Will Smith for King Richard.

Smith’s King Richard co-star Aunjanue Ellis is nominated for supporting actress, while last season’s Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya earns a supporting actor nod for Judas And The Black Messiah.

Respect’s Hudson will compete for the outstanding actress award with last season’s Oscar nominee Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Halle Berry for Bruised, Tessa Thompson for Passing, and Zendaya for Malcolm & Marie. Both The United States vs. Billie Holiday and Judas And The Black Messiah were ineligible for the NAACP Image Awards last season.

Samuel is nominated in the directing category alongside Denzel Washington for A Journal for Jordan, Lin-Manuel Miranda for tick tick…BOOM!, Reinaldo Marcus Green for King Richard, and Shaka King for Judas And The Black Messiah.

Passing director Hall made the cut in the Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Motion Picture) category alongside Ahmir Questlove Thompson for Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Jamila Wignot for Ailey, Samuel for The Harder They Fall, and Liesl Tommy for Respect.

Netflix is the lead company with 52 nominations and distributes The Harder They Fall, Passing, tick tick…BOOM and Bruised, among others in the TV categories. HBO’s Insecure lead the TV categories on 12 nods.

The 53rd NAACP Image Awards will take place on February 26. Anthony Anderson will host the show which will be without an audience as the pandemic continues but will air live.
