The Power Of The Dog, which was backed by Netflix and developed with and backed by BBC Film, earned two awards from eight nominations and saw Campion win her first Bafta, following a nomination for The Piano back in 1994.

Dune won five Baftas: for Hans Zimmer’s original score; Greig Fraser’s cinematography; plus production design, sound and special visual effects. Several of the winners paid tribute to director Dennis Villeneuve, who missed out on a nomination for best director.

Joanna Scanlan won leading actress for After Love, proving a popular winner in the room. Will Smith won best actor for King Richard.

Following its win at the SAG Awards, Coda continued its momentum by claiming several major prizes; Siân Heder collected adapted screenplay, whilst Troy Kotsur picked up supporting actor, becoming Bafta’s first deaf Film Awards winner.  In his speech, he joked: “Have you considered a deaf James Bond?”

Ariana Debose won best supporting actress for West Side Story. In her winner’s speech she praised fellow winner, casting director Cindy Tolan. All four acting recipients were first time winners.

Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car is another title with momentum after winning film not in the English language. “That got rid of my jet lag!” Joked Hamaguchi in on stage.

Belfast won in the hotly contested best British category, its only award of the night. Director Kenneth Branagh thanked British cinema audiences saying: “all hail the big screen, it’s alive!”

The event saw the return of a full physical ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, after last year’s mostly virtual iteration. Rebel Wilson was on hosting duties for the first time, making jokes about Vladimir Putin, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Royal Family and many more.

Likely due to their close proximity to the DGA (March 12) and Critics Choice Awards (March 13), many of the winners were not present to collect their prizes, including Campion, Smith and Paul Thomas Anderson, who won best original screenplay for Licorice Pizza.

The Harder They Fall won outstanding debut for Jeymes Samuel, who was also not present on the night.

No Time To Die star Lashana Lynch won the rising star award (voted for by the public). In her speech she praised her grandparents who were part of the Windrush generation.

Before the ceremony, the red carpet was disrupted by climate change protesters.
