Mel Gibson

Lionsgate will release Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection Of The Christ, his follow-up to the indie box office phenomenon The Passion Of The Christ, in two parts in 2027. Production is expected to begin in Cinecittà Studios in Rome in October.

The drama produced by Gibson and his Icon Productions partner Bruce Davey will arrive in cinemas on March 26, 2027, while Part Two is scheduled to open 40 days later on May 6, 2027. The dates are Good Friday and Ascension Day, respectively, on the Christian calendar.

The feature is currently in pre-production and according to reports is expected to star Jim Caviezel in the returning role as Jesus Christ. Lionsgate did not respond to elaborate on casting.

The Passion Of The Christ earned $370m in North America in 2004 through Newmarket Films and grossed more than $610m worldwide. That film ranked as the highest-grossing R-rated release of all time until last year, when Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine grossed $636m in North America and $1.3bn worldwide.
