EXCLUSIVE: Conic has picked up US filmmaker Charlie McDowell’s The Summer Book for UK-Ireland theatrical release from Charades.
Charlie McDowell directs the drama, which stars Glenn Close and Anders Danielsen Lie and is based on Tove Jansson’s 1972 novel. The story unfolds on a remote island in the Gulf of Finland where a young girl, played by newcomer Emily Matthews, spends the summer with her father and grandmother in the wake of her mother’s death. Over the course of the season, the three navigate loss and connection to form a profound bond.
Conic has scheduled a theatrical release for August 7.
Producers are the UK’s Stille Production and Free Range Films, US-based High Frequency Entertainment, Finland’s Helsinki Filmi and Case Study Films, the company co-founded by McDowell, his wife Lily Collins and Alex Orlovsky. Associate producers are MUV Capital, Finnish Impact Film Fund and Eye Eye Pictures.
The film world premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2024.
“It’s a beautiful, quietly powerful film with a sense of place and emotion that really lingers,” said Graham Fulton, co-director of Glasgow-based Conic.
