‘The Unstable Object II’

Daniel Eisenberg’s observational documentary The Unstable Object II has won the international competition prize at French festival FIDMarseille, which wrapped on July 11.

The Unstable Object II is a study of the changing nature of work, portraying three factories with different methods of production: a prosthetics factory in the mountains of Germany; an haute-couture glove manufacturer in France, where each glove is made by hand; and a jeans factory in Turkey, where about 2000 pairs of jeans are produced daily.

A French, German, Turkish and US co-production, The Unstable Object II world premiered at FID Marseille. It is a follow up to Eisenberg’s reflection on time and work, The Unstable Object, which also world premiered at the festival in 2011.

The Unstable Object II also won the Georges De Beauregard International Prize at FIDMarseille.

The festival’s international competition jury was presided over by French-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop.

The top prize in FIDMarseille’s French competition was awarded to Narimane Mari’s We Had the Day Bonsoir. A tribute to the director’s late partner, the painter Michel Hass, the film world premiered at FIDMarseille. The French competition jury was presided over by actress, editor and producer Dounia Sichov.

French film Dying In Ibiza (A Film In Three Summers) – a portrait of four young people looking for love and happiness - won three prizes at FIDMarseille, including the festival’s audience award. Shot over three summers from 2019 to 2021, the film is directed by Antonin Balekdjian, Léo Couture and Mattéo Eustachon.

Meanwhile, the festival’s first film prize went to Serbian docu-fiction Kristina, by Nikola Spasic, about a transgender sex worker.
