EXCLUSIVE: Paris-based sales company Alpha Violet has picked up international sales rights to Forastera, by Los Angeles-based Spanish filmmaker Lucía Aleñar Iglesias. The film is set to world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) Discovery section.
The film is Lucía Aleñar Iglesias’ first feature, a follow-up to her short film, also called Forastera, selected for Cannes Critics’ Week in 2020. It tells the story of a Cata, a young woman whose family vacation is dramatically disrupted by the violent death of her grandmother, an act to which she is the only witness. As the strange summer unfolds, Cata begins to inhabit the role of her grandmother, blurring the lines of reality and her family’s perceptions.
Aleñar Iglesias developed the feature with the Critics’ Week Next Step program, took part in La Résidence through Cannes Cinéfondation, and received the ArteKino award during MIA Market.
The project is produced by Lastor Media, Vilaüt Films, La Perifèrica Produccions, and Presenta in Spain, with Sweden’s Fox In The Snow, and Italy’s Kino Produzioni, Forastera shot in Mallorca. The Spanish cast includes Zoe Stein, Lluís Homar, Núria Prims, Marta Angelat, Martina García, and Swedish actor Nonni Ardal.
Virginie Devesa, CEO, sales and acquisitions for Alpha Violet, said: “Lucía Aleñar Iglesias’ exploration of loss and memory is so deep that I am certain the film will resonate greatly among viewers”.
Born and raised in Madrid, writer and director Aleñar Iglesias has also worked in the casting department for the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time, and line-produced for Academy Award-winner Peggy Stern.
