Further detail has emerged around TIFF: The Market’s Innovation Hub as organisers prepare to unveil eight exhibits at the cutting-edge of technology including three world premieres.
Presented by Canada Media Fund, the projects at Metro Toronto Convention Centre span AI, VR, mixed reality and interactive media and will be open to TIFF: The Market attendees from September 10-16 and to the public from September 15-16.
Mekwâc: “Now Is Good” by Quantum Wampum and James Monkman Studio receives its world premiere and is an immersive projection experience grounded in a Cree worldview that allows audiences to see the Indigenous cuture’s “profound relationships that connect people to the land, water, animals and one another”.
Also getting its first public outing is Tartupaluk by acclaimed Greenlandic-Canadian artist and performer Laakkuluk Williamson, which invites audiences to become citizens of an imagined Arctic republic inspired by a tiny real-world island claimed by both Canada and Greenland.
The third world premiere is The Big Picture – “Lunch Atop A Skyscraper” by French creator Chloé Rochereuil, which is inspired by the iconic photograph of 11 ironworkers eating lunch on a beam high above New York City and enables the audience to step outside the image and experience the world surrounding it.
Immersive eco documentary Solwata narrated by Mark Ruffalo and created by NowHere Media in partnership with Human Rights Watch and Agog: The Immersive Media Institute, gets its North American premiere. The exhibit follows Solomon Islands communities as they confront life-changing rising sea levels.
There are Canadian premieres for Body Proxy created by Los Angeles studio Tender Claws that invites audiences to become the physical body for AI; Dutch artist Iris van der Meule’s interactive simulation game Lesbian Simulator; Singing Chen’s immersive The Clouds Are Two Thousand Meters Up; and Chloé Lee’s interactive exploration of Singapore’s changing urban landscape, Reflections Of Little Red Dot created by Present Futures.
TIFF: The Market head Charles Tremblay said of the projects: “Their unique blend of cinema, contemporary art and emerging technology creates a meaningful connection between the audience and the compelling characters and stories reflected in each experience.”
