Tom Burke and Eve Hewson are to star in the next film from Room director Lenny Abrahamson, which is due to begin shooting in Dublin on March 2.
The untitled feature, also written by Abrahamson, will be produced by Element Pictures. A24 has boarded as US distributor, Elevation Pictures as Canadian distributor and FilmNation Entertainment is representing international sales.
Set within Dublin’s Jewish community in the late 1970s, the film follows Davey, a 12-year-old boy on the edge of change, navigating the anxieties of adolescence alongside the evolving dynamics of his parents’ marriage. The young lead is played by newcomer Shane Meagher.
Producers are Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Fremantle-owned Element Pictures, Catherine Magee (Normal People, Small Things Like These), and Abrahamson. Funding comes from Film4, High Frequency Entertainment, Screen Ireland and RTÉ.
Burke was last seen in Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, and credits include Furiosa, The Souvenir and television series Strike. Hewson’s recent credits include the film Flora And Son, directed by John Carney, as well as TV series’ The Perfect Couple and Bad Sisters. She next stars in Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, which will be released in June.
Irish filmmaker Abrahamson is known as the Oscar-nominated director of 2015 psychological drama Room as well as TV series Normal People, for which he secured an Emmy nomination. Previous features also include Adam & Paul, Garage, What Richard Did and Frank. The upcoming film will mark Abrahamson’s first since 2018’s The Little Stranger.
