‘Primate’, ‘Shelter’, ‘Kangaroo’, ‘Is This Thing On?’

Paramount’s Primate, Studiocanal’s Kangaroo, Black Bear’s Shelter and Disney’s Is This Thing On? lead the new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend.

The widest opener is monkey horror Primate in 508 locations. Johannes Roberts’s film centres on a friends’ group holiday that goes awry when an adopted chimpanzee is bitten by a rabid animal and becomes violent. 

Studiocanal is opening Australian comedy Kangaroo in 497 cinemas. Based on a true story, the film follows a man who teams up with a young girl to help rehabilitate joeys. Kate Woods directs. 

Jason Statham stars in Shelter which is debuting in 480 sites through Black Bear. Statham plays a former assassin living in exile who rescues a young girl from a storm, setting off a perilous chain of events. The actor’s most recent features, also action titles, include 2025’s A Working Man (£658,134 opening) and 2024’s The Beekeeper (£920,844 opening).

Bradley Cooper’s Is This Thing On? launches in 468 venues via Disney. Will Arnett stars as a recent divorcee who takes up stand-up comedy and is inspired by the real-life story of UK comedian John Bishop.

Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague opens in 99 cinemas through Altitude. The Netflix feature follows the shooting of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 film Breathless, which kicked off French cinema’s New Wave.

In event cinema, Paris Hilton documentary Infinite Icon: A Visual Memoir launches in 44 locations via CinemaLive.

Picturehouse Entertainment has horror film Rabbit Trap out in 13 cinemas. Dev Patel and Rosey McEwen star as a married couple who move to Wales to complete their new album but are menaced by a strange child.

BFI Distribution is screening a re-release of the 1962 British crime thriller Strongroom.

Further releases include the Melania Trump documentary Melania via Amazon; Indian comedy Gandhi Talks via Zee Studios; Indian action Mardaani 3 via Yash Raj Films; and Hong Kong anime Another World via Central City Media.
