
Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia leads new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend, opening into 572 sites through Universal.
The dark comedy, which premiered in competition at Venice Film Festival, follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a powerful CEO - played by Emma Stone - after they become convinced she is an alien. Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis play the two men.
Bugonia marks the fourth collaboration between Lanthimos and actor-producer Emma Stone. Their first, 2018’s The Favourite, had the biggest opening with £2.2m while 2024’s Poor Things debuted on £1.6m. This was shortly followed by Kinds Of Kindness which opened on £305,501.
Also out this weekend is US horror Shelby Oaks in 404 cinemas via Altitude. Chris Stuckmann’s debut feature follows a woman whose obsession with finding her long-lost sister sends her down a dark path.

Black Bear is opening David Mackenzie’s thriller Relay in 136 cinemas. Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington star in the Toronto 2024 premiere about a middleman who organises payoffs between corrupt corporations and whistle-blowers.
Curzon is opening Annemarie Jacir’s Palestine 36 in 45 locations. The Toronto premiere is set during 1936 as Palestinian villagers revolt against British colonial rule.
In re-releases, Back To The Future is screening in 607 locations for Universal to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Event cinema titles include Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical in 392 venues through CinemaLive; while music documentary Depeche Mode: M screens in 70 sites through Trafalgar Releasing.
In Indian cinema, romantic drama Ikk Kudi opens in 45 venues via Moviegoers Entertainment while Bakrania Media has a re-release of 2015’s Baahubali: The Epic, and family drama Madhaniyan.
Further releases include Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25 via Sovereign Film Distribution and Kpop Demon Hunters via Netflix.
