EXCLUSIVE: Fandango Sales has acquired international rights to Marco Bechis’ Back To Buenos Aires, which will have its world premiere in Competition at Venice Film Festival (September 2-12).
The film is a historical thriller set in Buenos Aires in 2008. It follows Mariano Guerra, who returns to Argentina after 33 years in Italy, to testify at the trial against the former military officers who kidnapped, tortured and enslaved him during the military dictatorship.
The film touches on a personal subject for Chilean-Italian filmmaker Bechis, who was kidnapped and imprisoned during Argentina’s dictatorship.
Adriano Giannini leads the cast, alongside Ana Celentano, Veronica Gerez, Olivia Nuss, Adrián Fondari, Paula Cohen, Marcelo Chaparro, Marcela Serli, Laila Fernandez, Eduardo Hoy, and Vijaya Bechis Boll. Fandango will release the title through its distribution arm on September 17, after Venice.
The film is produced by Fandango, 39Films, Karta Film, and 34 Filmes with Rai Cinema. Backers are the Italian Ministry of Culture’s cinema fund, the Piemonte Film TV fund, the Film Commission Torino Piemonte, and the Fondo Settoriale Dell’audiovisivo.
Bechis previously played in Venice Competition in 2008 with Birdwatchers and in the Cinema del Presente strand in 2001 with Sons And Daughters.
“I chose fiction because sometimes it is the only way to approach a truth that memory alone cannot fully express,” said Bechis of adapting his experience via film.
Raffaella Di Giulio, managing director, international sales and acquisitions for Fandango Sales, described Back To Buenos Aires as “a deeply personal and powerful film”.
