Viggo Mortensen will direct and star in western The Dead Don’t Hurt alongside Phantom Thread actor Vicky Krieps.

Shooting will begin later this month in Canada.

The film is set during the 1860s and follows Krieps as a French-Canadian who falls in love with a Danish immigrant (Mortensen), only to be separated from him during the US civil war.

Also in the cast is Screen Star of Tomorrow 2022 Solly McLeod, Danny Huston, Garret Dillahunt, Tom Bateman, Lance Henriksen and W. Earl Brown.

The Dead Don’t Hurt is produced by Mexico’s Talipot Studio, London-based Recorded Picture and Mortensen’s Perceval Pictures. HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales.

Mortensen produces alongside Regina Solórzano and Jeremy Thomas.

This is Mortensen’s second feature as a director. In 2020, he directed Falling which world premiered at Sundance before appearing in Cannes, Toronto and San Sebastian.
