EXCLUSIVE: Visit Films has acquired worldwide sales for EFM on Koxi’s Berlinale Forum selection Women As Lovers (Liebhaberinnen) and has scheduled market screenings.
The German-Luxembourg feature about the diverging fates of two women is adapted from the novel by Elfriede Jelinek and updates the story from 1970s to present-day late-capitalism.
While Brigitte is aware of the shrinking market value of her femininity and quickly makes the wealthy Heinz her lover and climbs the economic ladder, Paula, a social media-obsessed camgirl, tries to break out of her dreary home and has yet to learn about the hardships of life.
Johanna Wokalek, Hannah Schiller, and Ben Münchow star. Germany’s Coin Film produced with Amour Fou Luxembourg, and German co-producer bildundtonfabrik. Christine Kiauk, Herbert Schwering, Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu, Bady Minck, Judith Fülle, Matthias Murmann, Philipp Kässbohrer, and Caroline Kox served as producers.
Visit’s EFM sales slate includes Berlin Panorama selection Mouse premiering today [February 13], Rotterdam entries The Gymnast and The Misconceived, Sundance documentary Joybubbles, Keep Quiet starring Lou Diamond Phillips, and queer horror Son Of Sara.
Koxi said, “As Elfriede Jelinek wrote, sometimes the hunter can be in a worse situation than the game. For me, Women As Lovers is a grotesque heterosexual nightmare that reveals how love becomes impossible in a world shaped by post-capitalist obsessions, where intimacy is reduced to power, dependency, and transaction.”
Visit Films president Ryan Kampe added, “We like to poke and provoke. This film does both in an extremely intelligent and relatable way. Koxi has crafted a world in which we can see the desire and pain of modern society. Buyers will find a film that they can easily market and will garner attention in a crowded marketplace.”
