Where The Sun Is Born

EXCLUSIVE: Buenos Aires and Montevideo–based sales agency Compañía de Cine has acquired worldwide sales rights to Where The Sun Is Born (Allá Donde Nace El Sol) ahead of its world premiere in the Luminous section at International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA, November 12-22).

Honduran filmmaker Laura Bermúdez and Garifuna artist, dancer, and musician Jorge García co-directed the documentary set on the Honduran Caribbean coastline as García, haunted by loss and estranged from his culture, returns to his birthplace on a journey of spiritual reconnection.

The filmmakers grounded their work in years of collaborative research across Afro-Indigenous Garifuna communities and explore childhood landscapes and ancestral traditions and sacred music, ritual, and dance within the context of healing and resilience. Servio Tulio Mateo produced with Cine C.A. and Tercer Cine.

Where The Sun Is Born participated in the 2025 edition of Ventana Sur Docs and won awards from DocsBarcelona and Cannes Docs.

“The documentary opens a fascinating window into a Central American community rarely portrayed in cinema, combining powerful lyrical elements with the strength and vitality of this Afro-Central American people,” Compañía de Cine CEO Paulina Portela said. “It represents a valuable opportunity to broaden the narratives surrounding the Caribbean and celebrate the richness and resilience of its identities.”

“Partnering with Compañía de Cine represents a coming together of a shared vision to build networks from the Global South to the world,” Bermúdez said. Mateo added, “Beyond bringing the film to international audiences, this alliance affirms the strength of Honduran cinema and ensures our stories take their rightful place on the global stage.”

Portela brokered the deal with Mateo and co-director Bermúdez. Compañía de Cine’s titles include Joanna Reposi Garibaldi’s 2025 Tribeca entry A Bright Future, Romina Paula’s 2019 Berlin and San Sebastian selection Lemebel, and Tamara Uribe and Felipe Morgado’s Berlin Forum entry selection Oasis.
