‘Wicked: For Good’

Universal Pictures executives said Wicked: For Good earned $30.8m in previews on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday prior to the official Friday opening day in 4,115 cinemas, delivering the best previews for the year-to-date.

The second and concluding part to Jon M. Chu’s Broadway adaptation starring Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard earned $6.1m from 1,050 sites on Monday, $6.5m from 2,300 theatres on Wednesday, and $18.2m from Thursday’s double bill and standard previews.

Wicked: For Good is on track to earn between $125m and $150m this weekend. Last year’s first part opened on $112.5m and finished on $474.9m in North America, and $758.7m worldwide. It earned 10 Oscar nods and won for costume design and production design.

The concluding part opens as Elphaba and Glinda are estranged and living with the consequences of their choices. Elphaba lives in exile as the Wicked Witch of the West in the Ozian forest and continues her fight to free Oz’s silenced Animals and expose the truth about The Wizard.

Glinda has become the glamorous symbol of goodness in Oz and lives the high life at the palace in Emerald City under the instruction of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), reassuring the masses that all is well under the rule of The Wizard.

Marc Platt and David Stone produce. Executive producers are Stephen Schwartz, David Nicksay, Jared LeBoff, Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.
