‘Colony’

Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie virus thriller Colony has been pre-sold to more than 120 territories by South Korea’s Showbox ahead of its premiere here in Midnight Screenings.

The horror feature has been acquired for North America (Well Go USA), the UK (StudioCanal), Germany and Italy (Plaion Pictures), France (ARP SAS), Scandinavia (Mis Label), Spain (Energia), CIS and the Baltics (The World Pictures), Poland (Media4Fun), Turkey (Mars) and Australia/New Zealand (K-Movie Entertainment).

Asian territories to secure rights include Japan (Gaga Corporation), Latin America (BF Distribution), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Hong Kong (Edko Films), Indonesia (PT Primacinema Multimedia), the Philippines (Pioneer Films), India (Multivision Multimedia), Southeast Asia (Purple Plan Pte), Thailand (Sahamongkolfilm International) and Mongolia (Izagur Media).

The story follows a professor, played by Gianna Jun, whose witnesses a biotechnology conference spiral into catastrophe when a rapidly mutating virus is unleashed. As the outbreak spreads and the infected begin to transform in unexpected ways, authorities seal off the entire facility, trapping the survivors.

It is set to premiere in Cannes on Friday (May 15), with the filmmaker and cast in attendance, including Jun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been and Kim Shin-rock.

Well Go USA is set to release in North America from August 28. A Japan release is planned for 2027.

Colony marks the latest feature from Yeon, the acclaimed director of Cannes selections Train To Busan and Peninsula. Producers are Wowpoint and Smilegate in association with Midnight Studio. It is set for release in South Korea on May 21.

The film will make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this Friday, 15 May, in the Midnight Screening section, Out of Competition. Director Yeon Sang-ho and his cast—Gianna Jun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Shin Hyun-been and Kim Shin-rock—will walk the red carpet for the premiere.
