Trinity CineAsia has acquired all UK and Ireland distribution rights to Chinese counter-espionage thriller Scare Out from China’s Damai Entertainment.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, it is set to open theatrically in the territories on February 20, timed to the Chinese New Year, with previews from 17 February — day-and-date with its local release.
The story follows a squad from China’s National Security who race to identify and capture spies responsible for leaking classified information about the country’s latest fighter jet. What begins as a covert investigation soon involves civilians and city life into its orbit, as the hunt escalates into a deadly confrontation.
The cast is led by two of China’s top box-office and acclaimed actors, Jackson Yee – who reunites with Zhang after 2023 box office hit Full River Red – and Zhu Yilong of Only the River Flows alongside award-winning actress Song Jia from Her Story and Red Cliff.
It marks Trinity CineAsia’s first pickup of a film by Zhang, a leading figure of China’s Fifth Generation filmmakers known for titles such as Raise The Red Lantern, Ju Hou and Hero – all of which secured Oscar nominations – as well as more recent box office hits Full River Red. His directorial debut, Red Sorghum, won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1988.
Trinity CineAsia is also set to open Hong Kong comedy drama Night King by Jack Ng, director of box office smash A Guilty Conscience, during Chinese Lunar New Year. The Europe-wide distributor has previously picked up titles from Damai Entertainment (formerly Alibaba Pictures) such as Guan Hu’s Chinese war epic Dongi Rescue.
Recent UK theatrical releases by Trinity CineAsia include Bi Gan’s Cannes award-winner Resurrection, which also starred Yee; Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2; Hong Kong crime epic Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In; and Cannes Un Certain Regard award-winner Black Dog.
