Disney executives reported on Wednesday that Zootopia 2 delivered the highest opening day ever for a US animated film in China on an estimated $33.7m – offering a glimmer of hope after years of challenges in a market that was something of a goldmine prior to the pandemic.
This was also the highest single-day box office for an animated feature, the 10th-highest opening day by any Hollywood film in the territory, and the highest opening day by any US title since F9: The Fast Saga in May 2021.
2016 release Zootopia grossed $236.1m by the end of its run in China. Strong social scores for the sequel put Maoyan and TPP on 9.7 each, and Douban on 8.7. The numbers compare well to 9.5 for the first film, 9.1 for Inside Out, and 9 for Moana.
Early reports from the opening day in South Korea put the film at $1.7m for the second-highest Hollywood first day of 2025 behind Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning and the fifth-highest of the year overall.
Additionally, Zootopia 2 delivered the second-highest animated opening day of the year-to-date behind Demon Slayer; the second-highest opening day ever by a Disney animated film behind Frozen 2; the fourth-highest of all time by a US animation; and the fifth-highest debut of all time in the market.
Zootopia 2 got off to a strong start in North America as $10.2m from Tuesday previews recorded the second highest preview start for a Walt Disney Animation Studios release behind Moana 2 on $13.8m in 2024.
The 2016 original finished on $341m in North America and a little over $1bn at the global box office.
