The ongoing capers of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon et al trailed behind the $39.1m franchise record launch of Ocean's Twelve in 2004, but this was a respectable opening nonetheless.
Overall box office trailed the previous year for the second weekend in a row as the top 12 releases grossed $133.6m, approximately 9% behind the same weekend last year.
At World's End slipped to second place as $21.3m raised its cumulative total to $253.6m after three weekends, while Universal's comedy Knocked Up held well in its second weekend to rank third on $66.2m.
Sony's animated tale Surf's Up opened in fourth on $18m and may struggle given the surfeit of penguin films these past few years.
Hostel: Part II, released in North America through Lionsgate, opened in sixth on $8.8m and failed to live up to the original horror story's $19.6m number one debut in January 2006.
Waitress fell three to ninth for Fox Searchlight and has grossed $12m after six weekends on release. After four weekends Shrek The Third ranks fifth on $281.9m and after six Spider-Man 3 ranks eighth on $325.7m.
Next weekend's wide releases are: Fox's superhero sequel Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer with Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba and Michael Chiklis; and Warner Bros' family adventure Nancy Drew starring Emma Roberts.
