Al Pacino will play the legendary surrealist Spanish painter Salvador Dali in Room 9 Entertainment's Dali & I: The Surreal Story.

Andrew Niccol will direct following his last outing on 2005's Lord Of War and shooting is set to begin in June.Room 9 partners David O Sacks, Daniel Brunt and Michael R Newman areproducing Dali & I, which will focus on the later stages of the artist's life from the perspective of friend and art dealer Stan Lauryssen.

Niccol is re-writing the script after Room 9 originally picked up John Salvati's speculative screenplay based on Lauryssen's autobiographical book of the same name.

'We're beyond thrilled to have Al Pacino portray Salvador Dali, whose amazing surrealistic artistry was equally matched by his genius and eccentricity,' Sacks said.

'I am most drawn to the later years of Dali's life when the artist became the work of art,' Niccol said.

Pacino will next be seen in Ocean's 13 for Warner Bros and 88 Minutes for Millennium Films.

Pacino is represented by CAA, Niccol is represented by CAA and attorney John LaViolette, and Room 9 is represented by attorney David J Bloomfield.
