Palm Pictures has acquired US rights to the biographical ice hockey film The Rocket: The Legend Of Rocket Richard.

The film won nine awards at the 2007 Genie Awards including best director for Charles Biname and best actor for Roy Dupuis.

Palm Pictures plans for a late autumn theatrical release followed by a winter DVD release for the story of Maurice 'The Rocket' Richard, who overcame his working class roots to play for the Montreal Canadiens and became the first player to score 50 goals in a single season.

Head of theatrical distribution Ed Arentz brokered the deal with Emmanuelle Dessureault of Montreal-based FunFilm Distribution.

'Maurice Richard's remarkable accomplishments both on and off the ice have confirmed his name in history and established him as an icon in the world of hockey,' Palm Pictures' general manager Lisa Nishimura said.

'We are thrilled at the opportunity to share Richard's rousing and important story with the American audience.'
