The Queen and The Last King of Scotland screenwriter Peter Morgan will receive the Kanbar Award for excellence in screenwriting at the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival, which runs from Apr 26-May 10.

The award, named after the San Francisco film commissioner and philanthropist Maurice Kanbar, will be presented on May 3 to Morgan, a best original screenplay Oscar nominee for The Queen.

'Peter Morgan is a brilliant writer with a singular genius for dramatizing complicated sociopolitical circumstances and for revealing the humanity and intelligence of complex historical figures,' Film Society executive director Graham Leggat said.

'His work for television, film and the stage, particularly in recent years, when he has gone from strength to strength, is peerless.'

Morgan's credits include the HBO production Longford, which screened at Sundance last month, upcoming project The Other Boleyn Girl starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, several television plays, and the acclaimed stage play Frost/Nixon.

Paul Haggis received the inaugural Kanbar Award, established in 2005. Jean-Claude Carriere was the 2006 honouree.
