US-based PorchLight Entertainment has launched worldwide distribution and home entertainment division Condor Releasing.

The new venture will handle projects that fall outside PorchLight's family entertainment constituency and launches with its first acquisition, the thriller Towards Darkness with America Ferrera.

The Golden Globe winner served as executive producer on Antonio Negret's film, a Spanish and English-language account of a kidnap victim awaiting rescue.

PorchLight's president of worldwide distribution Ken DuBow and Karen Roberts bought the film after its premiere at Tribeca, and negotiated the deal with Ronna Wallace on behalf of producers Luiza Ricupero and Craig Anderson and the director.

'Towards Darkness is an excellent film and I'm very excited about bringing it into the international markets via Condor Releasing,' said DuBow, who joined the company in June 2007. 'I look forward to announcing several acquisitions of a similar calibre before AFM.'

'Launching Condor Releasing under Ken is a great way for us to take the skillset that has made PorchLight a leader in family entertainment and expand into other entertainment genres,' said PorchLight chief executive officer Bruce Johnson.

Condor Releasing's slate includes the comedy Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which will play in October at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain. Back in June, PorchLight launched PorchLight Home Entertainment, through which it will exploit its library of family entertainment. The division is headed by senior vice president Gary Jones.
